Why did I start a book club?



During the first few uncertain and isolated months of the pandemic, my platform Warrior Flow TV was born, providing yoga, meditation, sound baths, and fitness classes to many around the world who couldn’t leave their homes due to lockdowns and more.


A little further into pandemic times, I became part of an even larger and more global community, Insight Timer — the largest community of meditators around the world with approximately 19 million users of their free app. Since early this year I’ve been teaching slow and accessible types of yoga through Insight Timer along with my vinyasa classes on Warrior Flow TV.


As the concept of community continues to expand in new ways, and technology opens our eyes and shortens the distances between us, I decided to create a book club through Insight Timer. As of now we have more than 200 participants from around the world. It’s a great way to feel a sense of connection and community in times of rapid change and uncertainty.


I don’t spend a lot of money on unnecessary things. Food and books are top priority. I chose the title “A Paradise Built in Hell” by Rebecca Solnit as our first title for the month of July because it reminds us that out of catastrophes and crises (like the pandemic) we humans have a way of rediscovering our humanity in the midst of chaos.


I picked “Klara and the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro for the month of August, to shift to lighter reading, but still reflect about life and what is meaningful to us.


I wish you could see my apartment. There are books everywhere. Which reminds me of a quote from one of my home country Argentina’s greatest writers:


“I cannot sleep unless I am surrounded by books.”
