1- In less than a minute, tell us who you are and why we keep hearing good things about you?
I am the daughter of Sicilian immigrants, and I was born in Brooklyn and raised in Miami. I am a mother, grandmother, yoga teacher, wellness advocate, and cancer survivor with a passion for helping others take more control over the health and well-being of their mind, body, and spirit.
2- What were the pivotal roadblocks and challenges you encountered along the way that helped you define your path?
Growing up with immigrant parents who did not know English or the system forced me to push myself harder to learn things on my own, and that taught me to be very independent at a young age. I started working when I was fifteen so that I could pay for many of my own things to help my parents. That also helped me understand that I could do whatever I put my mind to and achieve it with hard and consistent work.
3- Why did you choose this field? Who were your role models? And what pushed you to learn and become who you are?
My role models from the beginning were my parents. They never told me there was anything I couldn’t do, and that gave me a strong and powerful belief that I could be and do whatever I wanted. After my cancer diagnosis in 2009 I came to yoga and meditation to help heal my body, mind, and spirit from the ravishing effects of chemotherapy and other medications. What I learned from my illness and research fueled my passion to help others. I became a yoga teacher and wellness advocate to empower others to take care of their health and well-being.
4- What is your legacy? Do you care about leaving a legacy?
I am not so worried about leaving a legacy as I am about leaving people better human beings who take responsibility for their own health and well-being and that of their families so they can have a better quality of life and be able to share their natural God-given gifts with the world.
5- What can we all do right now to make this world a better place?
I believe if we teach our children to respect, to honor, and to have compassion and empathy for one another through mindfulness practices, meditation, and yoga, they will learn to react from a place of love rather than fear and the world will be a better place.
6- In less than a minute, without sounding like a used car salesperson, tell us where to find you and what is the next big thing that everyone should be anticipating from you?
I am a Miami-based hatha yoga teacher. I offer private and community classes in person and online. For the last four years I have been studying with international yoga teacher Seane Corn about how trauma is stored in the body and how it can be processed and released through yoga postures. My plans for the near future are to teach more workshops on the therapeutic benefits of essential oils and yoga asanas as tools to help release trauma, to use them in my yoga classes, and, who knows, maybe write a book. You can follow me on Instagram and Facebook.
