1- In less than a minute, tell us who you are and why we keep hearing good things about you?
I am the founder of Comet Productions Inc. and HomeGirlYoga Worldwide. I am a longtime entrepreneur and now an ENTERTRAINOR. I founded my production company 30 years ago, I've been teaching yoga for 15 years, and I was a SoulCycle instructor for 8 years. I live loudly and seek truth for myself and also my students. I dig deep and encourage others to do the same. I am the mother of my adopted daughter Maya who is turning 16 and is my biggest teacher. I think people who enjoy my classes do so because I challenge them physically and mentally but also encourage them to lighten up. In my classes we laugh, we cry, and we flow towards the most authentic versions of ourselves.
2- What were the pivotal roadblocks and challenges you encountered along the way that helped you define your path?
I have always said that I’ve never met a strong person who didn’t have a difficult path. My father passed away when I was 19 years old. Instead of dealing with that grief, I turned to drugs and didn’t stop for 20 years. When I finally surrendered to getting help and getting clean, I made a vow that I would never go into a yoga studio on drugs — so that space became my safe haven, which led to me wanting to teach.
3- Why did you choose this field? Who were your role models? And what pushed you to learn and become who you are?
I chose to be in the fitness and wellness field because that’s what saved my life, and I wanted to do the same for others. I really don’t have any specific role models. I learn from everyone: we are all each other’s teachers and students in this life. I push myself to keep my ego in check and my soul path moving forward every day, and that is a challenge for me.
4- What is your legacy? Do you care about leaving a legacy?
That’s an interesting question for anyone — but, again, how do we keep ego out of it? I would like to be remembered as someone who was authentic and helpful, whose presence felt like a huge hug from a friend. I want my daughter to know that life is precious and every day is sacred, and to find laughter every day and see the beauty in each day. That’s the gift and the legacy I want to leave her with.
5- What can we all do right now to make this world a better place?
We can support and love each other in whatever is our most authentic way right now. So when we look back on this time, we will either say that we suffered through it or that we healed together while the whole world pressed the reset button!
6- In less than a minute, without sounding like a used car salesperson, tell us where to find you and what is the next big thing that everyone should be anticipating from you?
HomeGirl is everywhere! You can find me on instagram and vimeo teaching live yoga classes. I am also doing classes on zoom, and I am going to add live streaming to my website for a monthly subscription. Also in the works is a book — so stay tuned!!!!!
